The Laughter As Exercise Survey

This survey is an attempt to support and quantify the claim that laughter is a valid exercise program, relative to heart rate. It is meant to collect enough observational evidence to get researchers’ attention, show them what people are doing and how they are benefiting, and promote more studies to investigate laughter therapy as a complimentary health practice. It’s easy to ignore individual stories, but not 1,000 documented and verifiable stories all pointing in the same direction. (Read more below “Why we are doing this”).

Who this survey is for

Please only take this survey if you have recently participated in a structured laughter session run by a trained laughter leader that went for a minimum of 30 minutes and maximum of 90 minutes.

This project is a collaborative effort between the Laughter Online University and Laughter Yoga Australia. We hope you are able to support it. If you know someone who may be willing to provide their details to complete this survey please encourage them to do so!

We all know that laughter can help to heal in some way, but as for it being a prescribed medicine, we are a long way from proving this in any credible form. Many of the stories that we have are a one-off and are interesting, but because they are one-off they are just that: stories.

Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is when a university, or research unit from a hospital, gets involved in a lengthy, expensive, and time-consuming research study, to prove what they believe to be true. Once they have done this, they try to get it published, usually by a medical journal. Once it has been published, then it is often seen to be credible and can be taken seriously.

Practice Based Evidence (PBE) on the other hand, is where a lot of evidence is gathered to show that practically, something may have value, even though it is not yet proven. One of the many benefits of PBE is that someone may see it, and use it as the basis to carry out an EBP.

This is the first PBE Survey ever done. The purpose is to assess the impact of laughter in being able to reduce the use of medication for someone experiencing depression or anxiety.

We aim to:

  1. Provide practice-based evidence to show the impact of laughter on heart rate.
  2. Show the value of laughter as a form of low impact cardio-vascular exercise.
  3. Encourage research organizations to conduct a study based on our findings.
  • All information provided is strictly confidential and for academic research only.
  • We’re collecting personal details so that any evidence provided can be checked for legitimacy.
  • Published evidence and data will in no way be linked to individuals.
